Providing an engagement session for a couple can be an extremely rewarding experience for everyone involved. As a photographer we get to create images that may be at your reception or even in your home for years to come so it's important to pay attention to the lighting. Picking a time of day that works for you as the photographer may not be ideal for the couple. With that in mind you may have to deal with harsh shadows if you have to shoot mid afternoon or earlier if this is a better time for them. A few things to consider bringing to your session are reflectors, a flash or two and a great attitude. These essential items will allow you to look for shaded areas where you can pop in a fill flash. Or you can have your subject with their back to the sun and reflect the light back onto them for some beautiful fill light. A great attitude will ensure you're keeping the couple relaxed so they will be patient as you find different areas for creative lighting.
